The Itapecerica Road (« Estrada de Itapecerica ») is a road that links Sao Paulo in Brazil to one of the towns around the mega city. It is a clear picture of what these surrounding towns and suburbs are. But there is a lot of history behind this area in particular.  In July 1562, the local indians attacked Sao Paulo de PIratininga, the origin of Sao Paulo as we know today. And in order to protect the town, some bases were established around Sao Paulo. One of them was Itapecerica, which was founded by the jesuits in the same year with the objective not only to be a base to protect Sao Paulo, but as a village to help to teach and educate the local indians.

Itapecerica continued to grow and had its status upgraded twice, in 1841 and in 1877, becoming then a town. In 1944, the name was changed to « Itapecerica da Serra ». Since the very beginning the Itapecerica Road has been linking this town to Sao Paulo, and it is a clear picture  of the degradation that is established in the areas surrounding one of the biggest cities in the world, and that, unfortunately, some people have to live with it, and in it. These are not beautiful pictures, but they tell a story ... not a nice story, but a real one …
