Paris is called the "City of Light" ... actually the city did not receive this knickname originally due to its "lights", but because Paris was a center of education and ideas during the Age of Enlightenment. It was only in 1828, with the gas lamp illumination of the Champs-Elysées avenue (the first in Europe) that Paris definitely earned the nickname, "The City of Light" ("La Ville-Lumière)
